Rough-Terrain Cranes for Sale & Rent

Rough-terrain cranes are four-wheel-drive, four-wheel-steer mobile cranes on large off-road tyres, designed to work on unprepared and confined sites. A single cab controls both driving and lifting. They are not road-legal for long journeys and are usually floated to site on a trailer, then manoeuvre easily around tight job sites.

Typical capacities run from about 8 to 160 tonnes. Tadano (GR series), Grove (RT series), Link-Belt and Kobelco are leading names. They are a staple of oil-and-gas, industrial plant and infrastructure sites where compact off-road access is essential.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rough-terrain crane for?

Lifting on confined, unprepared or off-road sites — refineries, industrial plants, bridge and infrastructure work — where a compact four-wheel-drive crane can move around obstacles a road crane cannot reach.

Are rough-terrain cranes road-legal?

Generally no for long-distance road travel; they are transported to site on a low-loader. On site they move freely on their off-road tyres.

Rough-terrain vs all-terrain?

Rough-terrains are cheaper and more compact for off-road site work but cannot travel far on the road; all-terrains cost more but drive to site at highway speed. Choose based on how the crane gets to and moves around the job.

What should I check on a used rough-terrain crane?

Tyres, drivetrain and steering, boom and outrigger condition, hydraulics, hours and safety-system function, plus inspection history.
